From permitting to delivery: CyrusOne’s MIL1 data center project in Segrate is now moving into the construction phase.
At Montana, we supported the design and permitting process as environmental consultants and water specialists, combining specialist environmental inputs with a structured approach to risk management and opportunity creation. This meant working on flood and climate exposure, on water and drainage strategy, and on the measures needed to translate regulatory requirements into solutions that strengthen resilience and sustainability.
Our approach treats Data center as more than a “black box” on a plot: it is an infrastructure hub embedded in its context, where business objectives, environmental performance, climate resilience and site strategy need to be coordinated from day one.
In Segrate, our work focused on:
- Environmental consultancy within the authorization process, including specialist environmental studies and technical support during permitting;
- Climate-informed flood-risk assessments and mitigation measures to protect long-term operability;
- Integrated stormwater and wastewater strategy, coordinating regulatory requirements with design solutions;
- Hydraulic neutrality (invarianza idraulica), Nature-based Solutions / SuDS to manage water quantity and quality while minimizing reliance on conventional drainage networks and promoting water reuse, detention and groundwater recharge, alongside landscape elements that contribute to amenities and biodiversity.
Thank you CyrusOne, Maestrale, RBA and all project partners for the collaboration — looking forward to what comes next!
